Directions: There are 4 reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked [A], [B], [C] and [D]. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage One

"Follow your own path because it will bring you to the places you were meant to be." ― Donald J. Trump

When people don\'t think for themselves, problems occur. In fact, the lowest points in history occurred when people stopped thinking for themselves and followed the wrong persons. These times gave rise to dictators and brutal, inhuman behaviors.

So invest the time to identify your intrinsic (内在的) values ― what you really want and are willing to work hard to get. They provide you with strength, determination, and a powerful compass .

For me, life is all about discovery. I feel best when I learn something I didn\'t know. Although I work in a reality-based business, I have a strong respect for the mysteries of life because they make me feel like an explorer on an exciting search. They heighten my natural curiosity, making me constantly question and want to learn more. As a result, I\'m introduced to amazing people, and my life is constantly enriched with new understandings, insights, and knowledge. Don\'t put blinders (眼罩) on or limit yourself. Reach out, seek, and explore.

Finding your purpose may take a while or all of your life. Or you could have discovered it when you were five years old and are still refining it. Since we all differ in our final places, we all must move at our own pace. Make it a top matter to keep exploring, learning, discovering, and moving forward because that is the best means for a successful life.

21. The main point the author tries to make in this passage is that __________.

[A] a successful life relies on a clear purpose and constant efforts

[B] if people stop thinking independently, a dictator will rule a country

[C] all life long we should make discoveries

[D] don\'t put blinders on yourself

22. "Follow you own path ..." because __________.

[A] we all differ in our ways of thinking for ourselves

[B] we all have different places to reach

[C] we all have different things to learn

[D] we all have different people to know

23. From the passage, we can learn all the following except that __________.

[A] if you have a clear idea about your intrinsic values, you will have a definite direction.

[B] understanding your intrinsic values will enable you to be energetic and strong in will

[C] our life purposes may become increasingly clear as life goes on

[D] finding your purpose means a successful life

24. The author tells us that his purpose of life is __________.

[A] to keep searching something new      [B] to work in a reality-based business

[C] to raise his curiosity                 [D] to ask questions about the mysteries of life

25. Once you have found your purpose, the most important is __________.

[A] to keep refining it                   [B] to move at our your own pace

[C] to keep exploring and moving forward   [D] to differ from other people in the final place

Passage Two

I don\'t think the youth of today is any more lost than the rest of us. What is different is the pressures that they\'re under — far greater than experienced by previous generations.

With every decade our desires become increasingly impossible to fulfill. We aren\'t content with having enough; we want it all. We work and work to get more and more stuff. Our children suffer because we aren\'t there enough for them. From a very young age they\'re pushed off to day-care centers where they lose that precious early interaction with their mother in particular. There is no time anymore. Everyone flies about like crazy bats (蝙蝠), trying to do the impossible.

Pressed together in front of televisions and greatly corrupted (使道德堕落) with violent video games from giant immoral money-making companies. Eating take-away meals most nights of the week that haven\'t got an ounce of food value. What do you expect?

Everywhere there is a criminal lack of responsibility in the U.K. today. There is no guidance from adults, no good examples being set. The youth that we see out of control on the streets were once tiny babies, the apple of their parents\' eye. So what is it that goes so terribly wrong to make them end up knifing or shooting each other?

Adults have got to be there for their kids; the family unit is everything. You must get your priorities in order and stop changing partners as frequently as an "excuse me dance".

It\'s a tall order now because we have slipped so far in allowing the wild money-making commercialism and television programs that are full of mindless rubbish to ruin our children with their evil greed.

How dare we call our children a lost generation! It\'s about time we started to pull our socks up and set some good examples for them to live by.

26. According to the context, if someone is lost, he/she has __________.

[A] experienced great pressure          [B] been on a wrong way of life

[C] failed in fulfilling his desires        [D] gone mad, trying to do the impossible

27. The author argues that the main factor that has caused some youths to get lost is __________.

[A] bad television programs             [B] violent video games

[C] some immoral companies            [D] irresponsible parenting

28. Parents neglect one of their very important duties — interacting with their very young children, because __________.

[A] they are greedy in pursuit of wealth

[B] they have too much working pressure

[C] they think going to day-care centers earlier is good for children

[D] they are not pleased with their career achievements

29. By "there is a criminal lack of responsibility (Para. 4)", the author means that some parents __________.

[A] are satisfied as long as their children won\'t be criminals

[B] lack the responsibility to break the association between their children with criminals

[C] turn a blind eye to children playing knives

[D] ignore their parental duties to such a degree that they are qualified as criminals

30. If a parent changes partners as frequently as an "excuse me dance", __________.

[A] no one in the family can keep children from watching rubbish TV programs

[B] he/she would be a good example for children

[C] chances are that his/her family unit would be broken

[D] his/her priorities would be in a mess

Passage Three

Over half of doctors would deceive insurance companies to obtain coverage (保险) for their patients, according to a survey presented at the annual meeting of the Society of General Internal Medicine in Washington, D.C, last week.

Many doctors are finding that their role as a patient defender often conflicts with their obligations (职责) to third party payers, said Dr. Victor Freeman from the clinical economics research unit of Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Occasionally, there is a true ethical conflict; for example, when a third party payer\'s rules exclude coverage for a medically indicated referral (转诊病人).

Doctors in this dilemma have an ethical obligation both to their patient and to following the rules. The doctors\' willingness to deceive depended on the gravity of the patient\'s condition. For example, one theoretical patient had chronic (慢性的), non-healing leg ulcers (溃疡) . The patient, who had never smoked, experienced pain while at rest. The insurance company denied coverage on the reason that this was a pre-existing condition. In another example a patient sought coverage for rhinoplasty (鼻整形术) because she felt "sad and unattractive" and was laughed over her nose. This was denied because she experienced no breathing problems. While 57% of the doctors approved of the deception to help the first patient, only 3% did so for the second. In all, 75% of the doctors described themselves as patient defenders but tried to follow the rules whenever they could.  However, 57% admitted to lying sometimes.

"What is most concerning is what these doctors would do in real life?" asked Dr. Freeman. "If only 57% of the doctors are willing to deceive when confronted with the most severe dilemma, what happens to the patients of the doctors who play by the rules?"

31. According to the passage, many doctors find themselves at a loss when __________.

[A] their patients\' coverage are excluded by insurance companies

[B] they cannot both defend their patients\' benefits and follow rules

[C] their patients need to be treated in a different medical department

[D] their patients ask them to give proof for their coverage

32. Some doctors may lie to insurance companies to help those patients __________.

[A] who will have to have an operation          [B] who suffer from a chronic illness

[C] who cannot pay their medical bills           [D] who are seriously ill

33. The passage tells us that an insurance company will pay __________.

[A] if a patient\'s condition exists before he gets the coverage

[B] if a patient\'s condition is acute

[C] if the treatment is necessary for the sake of health

[D] if patients are in bad conditions

34. From the passage we can learn that __________.

[A] the author doesn\'t take a side in the issue of doctors\' lying

[B] doctors can\'t live up to their obligations

[C] the doctors who lie in their profession are also liars in real life

[D] many patients are pleased with the doctors who lie for their benefits

35. Which of the following best describes Dr. Freeman\'s attitude toward doctors\' lying?

[A] Critical.        [B] Indifferent.        [C] Objective.       [D] Neutral.

Passage Four

Creating no-smoking areas in bars and restaurants does not lead to loss of income and can bring many advantages, according to a new survey conducted in five European countries. The survey of 1754 owners and employees of bars and restaurants showed that 73% of respondents believed that a smoke free area protects the health of customers, owners, and employees, while responding to public demand.  A similar number (78%) agreed that environmental tobacco smoke increases the risk of lung cancer.

The most common explanations given for not having a no-smoking area were architectural limitations and a lack of demand from customers. Financial costs were rarely given as a concern. One in six of the respondents said they had had complaints from customers about tobacco smoke in the past six months. In three of the countries — Belgium, Finland, and France — legislation restricting smoking in bars and restaurants already exists. The other two countries have no such law. However, the investigators found that many establishments had no protective measures against environmental tobacco smoke. In Finland the law is far more strictly observed. The awareness of the impact on health of passive smoking was higher in Finland and Belgium than in the other three countries, higher in women than in men, and higher among respondents from constructions with protective measures than among respondents from constructions without them.

The survey\'s organizers are calling on governments to inform bars and restaurants of demands from customers for a smoke free environment, the economic benefit of taking appropriate measures, and the risk of exposure to tobacco smoke. They are pushing for EU member states that have not already legislated for smoke free areas to put in place measures to ensure that constructions with more than 50 seats set aside at least half their capacity as a clearly signposted area where smoking is not allowed.

36. Which of the following is NOT true of the survey?

[A] The survey aims at forbidding smoking in public places in EU.

[B] The areas surveyed cover five European countries.

[C] The subjects surveyed are in some service establishments.

[D] Its findings show most people beware the benefits of smoke free areas.

37. From the second paragraph, we learn that __________.

[A] European countries have already had laws to restrict smoking in public places

[B] Finland has implemented a strict law against environmental tobacco smoke

[C] very few respondents have realized a smoke free area is public demand

[D] the owners who didn\'t establish no-smoking areas are afraid of losing some customers due to the restriction

38. Which of the following cannot account for disapproval of establishing no-smoking areas?

[A] There is no way to set up a no-smoking area in some constructions.

[B] Most customers haven\'t raised such a demand so far.

[C] The measure is not financially sound.

[D] The measure is not legally obligatory in some of the five countries mentioned in the report.

39. The purpose of the survey is __________.

[A] to show the public attitude toward smoke free areas

[B] to argue for setting up smoke free areas

[C] to inform the benefits of smoke free areas

[D] to promote the establishment of smoke free areas

40. The survey\'s organizers __________.

[A] demand some EU member governments to pass laws to forbid smoking in public places

[B] are making repeated requests to some EU member governments to set up smoke free areas

[C] suggest that signs with "smoking is not allowed" be put in place

[D] propose that a smoke free area should at least have 50 seats
